Though usually harmless, dark shades or circles under the eyes can look unpleasant. Lack of sleep, excess alcohol consumption and too much sun exposure are just some of the things that can lead to this pesky issue. Getting rid of dark shades under your eyes is usually a quick fix. A few minutes out of your morning routine and a few household items should clear things up, leaving you ready to face the world.
Step 1
Slice a cucumber or a potato, and place one slice over each eye for at least 15 minutes. Potatoes contain the enzyme catecholase, which helps lighten the skin and is often found in cosmetics.
Step 2
Apply a cream under your eyes that targets dark circles and contains vitamins K, C and E as well as retinol. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.
Step 3
Place a bag of frozen vegetables over your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 4
Press the excess moisture from two used tea bags. Lie back and place a tea bag over each of your eyes. Discard the tea bags after 15 to 20 minutes. Be sure to use black, green or white tea bags. Herbal teas are not as effective.
Step 5
Massage almond oil into the skin under your eyes every night before going to bed to help eliminate dark shades and prevent them from returning.
Tips and Warnings
- Wear sunglasses, cut back on salt and alcohol, drink more water and get enough sleep to prevent future dark eye circles.
- If the discoloration under your eyes persists, talk to your doctor to rule out any possible medical conditions and find a treatment that will work for you.
