If you suffer from dry, flaky, peeling fingernails that rob your hands of their natural beauty and cause you constant pain, try an at-home remedy to strengthen your nails. While numerous home remedies for peeling fingernails exist for your experimentation, however, some of these remedies may not work for you. Therefore, speak with your doctor about medical treatments for peeling fingernails, to be certain that you are taking the right course of action for your problem.
Step 1
Wear gloves if you work with your hands in water to keep the water from separating and swelling your nails. Wear gloves when you use household cleaners, also, to keep the cleaners from wetting your nails and causing them to peel; and dry your nails with a blow dryer after you get out of the shower or bath.
Step 2
File dry nails in only one direction. Any back-and-forth motion can weaken nails and cause them to split and peel.
Step 3
Use a letter opener or other flat, sturdy tool to open mail, remove labels or perform any other task that you would normally use your fingernails to do.
Step 4
Trim your nails to about 1/8 inch past your fingers if you work at a computer all day. Striking the keyboard constantly with long nails can cause them to break and peel.
Step 5
Massage liquid coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil or petroleum jelly into your nails two to three times per day to keep them hydrated. You can also apply the petroleum jelly or oil to your nails at night, and sleep with gloves on to moisturize your nails while you sleep.
Step 6
Use the USDA Food Pyramid to eat a balanced, well-rounded diet that includes fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and dairy. If you are a vegetarian or on a special or restricted diet, consult with your doctor to determine if you are experiencing nutritional deficiencies that are causing your nails to split and peel.
Step 7
Use a folk remedy to strengthen your nails and discourage them from peeling. Mix two beaten egg yolks with 1 tbsp. organic honey and 1/4 cup organic milk in a small bowl. Soak fingernails in the mixture for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water and blow-dry nails.
