Natural Ways to Stop Grey Hair

While many people consider gray hair to be a natural part of aging, it can be a somewhat traumatic experience, particularly if the graying process starts early in life. However, there are some natural ways to stop gray hair without chemical dyes or medical treatments. These remedies have not been approved by the FDA however, consult your doctor before starting any home treatments.

Thyme Essential Oil and Sesame Oil

According to Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," a mixture of thyme essential oil and sesame oil can be used to help stop gray hair. To make and use this mixture, combine ½ tsp. thyme essential oil with 3 tbsp. sesame oil in a small bowl and stir to combine. Wet your hair in the shower, and gently massage the mixture onto the scalp and roots of the hair follicles for 3 to 5 minutes. Leave the mixture on the hair and scalp for 15 minutes before rinsing and washing with your regular shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be repeated daily as long as you do not notice any skin or scalp irritation or redness. Unused portions of this mixture can be kept in a cool, dark place for up to 30 days if necessary or if you choose to make a larger mixture at one time.

Bee Pollen and Jojoba Oil

According to Jethro Kloss, author of "Back to Eden: Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Food and Home Remedies Since 1939," a mixture of bee pollen and jojoba oil is commonly applied to the scalp to stop gray hair. To make this mixture, combine ½ tbsp. bee pollen with 4 tbsp. jojoba oil in a small container and whisk vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds to combine. Apply the mixture to your wet scalp with clean fingertips and massage the mixture in for 5 minutes. Leave the mixture on the scalp for 10 minutes before rinsing with water and washing with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be used twice per day as long as it doesn't bother your skin or cause any irritation. Unused portions of this mixture should be stored in a container with a tight-fitting lid in a cool, dark and dry place for no more than one week.

Sage Essential Oil and Jojoba Oil

According to Colleen Kaye Dodt, author of "The Essential Oils Book: Creating Personal Blends for Mind & Body," a mixture of sage essential oil and jojoba oil can be applied to the roots of the hair and scalp to help get stop the graying process. To make and use this mixture, combine 1 tsp. sage essential oil with 5 tbsp. jojoba oil in a small bottle and shake or stir to combine. Pour a small amount of the mixture onto clean fingertips and gently massage the liquid onto the scalp and roots of the hair. Leave the mixture on for 20 minutes before rinsing with water and washing with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be used once per day, and unused portions can kept in a cool, dark place for up to one month.
