If you have a favorite golf cap, chances are you wear it often. The more often you wear it, the more sweat, dirt and other debris it can collect. Keeping your cap clean presents a challenge if you've never washed a soft or brimmed hat before, because incorrect handling and drying can cause color fading, shrinking or a broken brim. Following a few simple steps before washing will help ensure your favorite golf hat stays in shape and looks good.

Step 1

Read the tag inside the cap. Many clothing items come with one or more tags that provide information on the material from which a garment or cap is made, as well as washing instructions.

Step 2

Wash a small portion of the cap following the instructions on the label. Do this if there is not a label, as well. Test a small amount of detergent, diluted in hot water, on the inside of the cap to see the effect on the color of the cap. If the color runs or fades with hot water, re-test with cold water or try a milder detergent. If the cap still runs, try rubbing with water only.

Step 3

Spray a pre-treating cleaning agent on the inside of the cap to test a spot cleaner. Let it sit for five minutes, then rinse with cold water and let it dry. If this process does not damage the hat, pre-treat any stained areas on the rest of the hat, but do not rinse prior to washing.

Step 4

Wash the cap following the directions on the label if your test-wash did not damage the cap's color. Wash the cap in cold water if you are at all concerned about damaging your hat. Wash the hat alone if it is a light color to prevent other items in the washing machine from bleeding their colors onto your cap or hand wash your cap in the sink.

Step 5

Remove the cap from the washing machine after the washing is complete. Inspect for any bleeding or staining that may have occurred or any stains that may not have been removed by washing. Lightly scrub areas that need extra attention.

Step 6

Place the cap over a plastic bowl about the size and shape of the cap to dry. Placing your cap over a bowl helps the cap dry in its natural shape.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some websites, including Good Housekeeping, suggest washing caps in dishwashers, and some companies even make dishwashing machines cages for caps.
  • Do not dry your golf cap in a clothes dryer, as the heat may shrink the cap.

Things You'll Need
