The rose has long been valued not only for its distinct pleasing aroma, but for its healing properties as well. Rose Magazine claims it has been an ingredient in many folk remedies, as it benefits dry, sensitive, and aging skin. A pure rose essential oil may have calming effects and can help with depression. Rosemary is another herb valued for its cosmetic and medicinal properties. It is said to relieve muscle pain, help with circulation and stimulate hair growth, suggests the University of Maryland Medical Center. To make a rosemary rose oil, you will need fresh herbs of both plants.

Step 1

Take a 1/2 cup of rose petals and 1/2 cup of rosemary and place them in the bottom of a mason jar. Crush the plants with the end of a rolling pin.

Step 2

Add jojoba oil to the jar. Pour just enough to cover the plant material.

Step 3

Set the jar in a windowsill, or in direct sunlight for four weeks. Shake the bottle every day, and rotate every so often so different sides can face the sun.

Step 4

Strain the bottle after four weeks has passed. Use a mesh strainer and pour the oil into a dark bottle.

Step 5

Store the oil out of sunlight and at room temperature.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use only the leaves of the rosemary plant, not the stems or other woody parts. Be sure not to refrigerate the oil or it will harden. You can use the oil blend for your hair by massaging it into your roots and letting it sit for 20 to 30 minutes. You can also experiment by adding other herbs to the blend. Lavender would be a complementary herb for the skin and hair.
  • Please test the rosemary rose oil blend on your arm to see if you experience any allergic reactions. Be careful not to touch the top of the essential oil bottles as this can contaminate them. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant material and need a carrier oil, such as jojoba, to dilute them before touching the skin. It is always important to check with your health care provider before using herbal treatments.
