Badminton is a game that can be played indoors in a gymnasium or on an outdoor court. The object of the game is to volley a cork ball with plastic feathers--a shuttlecock--over a net, forcing the opposing team to miss the return shot. Playing badminton can be a fun and healthy outdoor activity for the whole family. All that is required is a net, a shuttlecock, some badminton rackets and a desire to have fun.

Playing Field

Badminton can be played with one or two players per team. If playing singles badminton, the court is 22 feet long by 17 feet wide. For doubles badminton the court is 19 feet, 6 inches by 20 feet, according to the badminton rules page at Texas A&M University. The net is hung at 5 feet in the center and 5 foot, 1 inch on the ends.

Serve

In singles badminton, players serve from the right side of the court behind the serving line. The serve must serve underhanded. Serving for badminton doubles, the shuttlecock must be served to the opposing player diagonal from the position of the server. The shuttlecock must be returned to remain in play. A serve that hits the net and goes over is retaken, but if it does not go over the net it counts as a fault. This could result in the other team getting a point or being given the serve, depending on the specific rules of the game.

Match

A badminton game is played to 15 points in a doubles match and 11 points for women's singles. Singles matches for men are played to 15 points, according to BadmintonSource.com. Modern outdoor badminton allows points to be scored y rally or service play. When scoring by service play, only the serving team can score a point, and if the opposing team wins the volley they get the serve. In rally badminton games either team can score a point and the team that scores the point gets the following serve.
