Loose skin can develop from several different causes. Extreme sagging of the skin is often the result of extreme weight loss--the body reduces in mass at a faster rate than the skin can maintain, causing it to separate from the skin and hang loosely on the body. More mild cases of loose skin can occur from aged skin that has lost its elasticity. This typically occurs in older individuals whose skin starts to become weathered and drier. Regardless of why the skin has become loose, there are several things you can do to rejuvenate your body and restore your skin's tightness.
Step 1
Apply moisturizer to your skin at least twice daily, ideally once in the morning and at night. Moisturizing lotions help apply nutrients and moisture topically to the skin, and they also help lock in moisture to improve skin elasticity.
Step 2
Exfoliate your skin with a loofah scrub or exfoliating scrub twice a week. Exfoliating the skin eliminates dead skin cells and promotes new cell growth, helping the skin reel itself back in close to the skin at a faster rate. Exfoliating can be harmful to the skin when done too often, since it can wear off healthy skin.
Step 3
Consume a diet featuring foods high in vitamins A, C, and E. These vitamins are used by the skin to produce collagen, which helps support the skin's structure and keep it elastic and adaptable. These vitamins are commonly found in fruits and vegetables, and can also be taken in supplement form.
Step 4
Exercise frequently, at least three times weekly. Exercising moves the skin and helps limber it up, which can expedite skin tightening. Sweating also keeps the skin moist and healthy, and exercise can create new muscle fibers that lead to an increase in muscle mass, both of which provide the skin with more muscle surface area on which to attach.
Step 5
Drink plenty of water--at least eight glasses daily. Consuming water is vital to keeping the skin moisturized and healthy, and the elasticity gained from being well hydrated will help the skin return to its normal form.
