When you feel out of balance in one or more parts of your life, you will find yourself more easily fatigued, discouraged and even depressed. In fact, conflict between your family and your work life can affect your performance at work as well as your relationships with those you love. Even though balancing your personal and professional lives can be a challenging task, your happiness and satisfaction in both areas depend on you resolving the conflict between them.

Step 1

Assess your relationship with your job and with your family, making a list of what you are doing in each area and what you wish you could do. MayoClinic.com staff say in the article "Work-Life Balance: Tips to Reclaim Control" to begin "evaluating your relationship to work," such as how many hours you are working and how much work-related stress affects your home life.

Step 2

Identify problem areas, such as missed time with your spouse and your children or perhaps unrelenting fatigue during off hours. Then, take time to explore and to consider your options in each problem area. MayoClinic.com staff suggest asking your employer about the possibility of flex hours, telecommuting or other scheduling flexibility.

Step 3

Review your options with both your employer and your spouse and children. Seek feedback, particularly from your family, regarding which options might best help to address the problems that have been occurring. For example, if you are working a 60-hour workweek and you arrive home exhausted every night, finding a way to redistribute responsibilities at work might help you to reduce your schedule.

Step 4

Learn how to establish and maintain clearer boundaries between your work and home life. For example, if you find yourself answering work-related emails every evening after dinner, tell yourself "no" and leave the emails for work-designated hours. Then, purposefully fill that time with activities that will help you to enjoy the rest that you need or to connect and bond with your family.

Step 5

Remain patient in your search for possible solutions to the conflict that you experience between your family and your work. Emily Berry explains in the article "Achieving Work-Life Balance: More Than Just a Juggling Act" that "work-life balance is...different for each individual" and that it "changes over time." She recommends that when you do discover workable solutions, you reassess those solutions on a regular basis.

Tips and Warnings

  • Seek help from supportive friends and coworkers whom you trust and who can give you helpful feedback and advice regarding your choices.
  • Do not ignore conflicts between your work and home life, as they can significantly damage your relationships and your health when left unaddressed.
