Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is a noninvasive test to view the brain. An MRI uses magnets and radio wave technology to create images of brain structure, nerve tissues and blood flow, notes MedlinePlus. Each MRI test can create up to hundreds of brain images. The MRI brain images are either kept on a computer or individual images are placed on film. Serious side effects from a brain MRI are rare.

Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia, the fear of small, closed-in spaces, is a common side effect of a brain MRI. It can occur during a brain MRI test, notes Stanford University Tech Museum of Innovation. Ask for an open MRI if claustrophobia is a concern before the test or if it has occurred in the past. The open MRI machine has walls that are spaced farther apart so they do not fall so close to the body.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a common reaction before or during a brain MRI test. The doctor can administer an anti-anxiety drug before the MRI to ease any feelings of panic, according to MedlinePlus. Let the doctor know if thoughts of the test are overwhelming. If anxiety occurs during the test, alert the MRI technician overseeing the test and he will take the appropriate action depending on the unique situation during the MRI test.

Allergic Reaction

An allergic reaction can occur if a contrast dye is administered intravenously to show the structures of the brain more clearly during the brain MRI. The typical dye used in a brain MRI is gadolinium. An allergic reaction to this dye occurs only rarely, notes the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide.

Damage Due to Metal in Items

Hearing aids can be damaged by the magnet in an MRI. It is important to remove them prior to this test. It is very important that any items containing metal are left outside the MRI room, notes MedlinePlus. Items that contain metal can become airborne during the test or cause a problem in the MRI machine.
