How to Whiten Dentures

Dentures are artificial dental implants that are used to replace teeth that have fallen out or have needed to be removed. Although designed to resemble natural teeth, dentures cannot be whitened by the same products used to whiten teeth. However, dentures can get stained in the course of every day use and sometimes need to be whitened.

Step 1

Use denture creams and brushes. Denture cream is essentially toothpaste for dentures (specially formulated for dentures, unlike regular toothpaste). Denture cream should be applied twice a day using a technique very similar to normal tooth brushing. A regular toothbrush can be used instead of a denture brush, but the latter is preferable as it is designed for dentures.

Step 2

Soak in a whitening solution. Denture cleaning solutions can be purchased in individual packets and are used to soak the dentures overnight to remove stains and disinfect the dentures. This should be done every night.

Step 3

Use ultrasonic cleaners specifically designed for dentures. These machines use high frequency sound waves to break up food particles and stains to help keep dentures white. These should be used daily.

Step 4

Use an ultraviolet device. In addition to killing bacteria, ultraviolet light denture cleaning devices will help whiten the dentures' surface. These machines can be used daily.

Step 5

Create a dilute bleach solution. Mix one part of bleach to three parts of water and soak the dentures in it overnight; this will disinfect and "bleach" the surface. After bleaching the dentures, they should be thoroughly rinsed in tap water. This procedure can be done as needed or daily if desired.
