Chemical peels can be beneficial to your complexion, as they reveal the healthy, glowing skin that was hidden under a layer of dead skin cells. A facial peel can also hydrate the skin and reduce signs of aging. The downside is that the harsh chemicals are abrasive and can sometimes cause redness, stinging and swelling. As a gentle alternative, make a homemade facial peel and experience the benefits of a facial peel without the harsh chemicals.
Step 1
Place 1 tbsp. plain gelatin in a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1/2 cup vegetable or fruit juice appropriate for your skin type. Use carrot or apricot juice if you have dry or mature skin. Select grapefruit, lemon, lime, grape or tomato juice for oily skin. Cranberry juice is suitable for any skin type.
Step 2
Place the bowl in the microwave oven and heat until the juice is warm. Stir the mixture until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
Step 3
Refrigerate the mixture 20 to 30 minutes, or until it begins to thicken. Don't allow the mixture to thicken so much that it sets up, as you won't be able to spread the jelled mixture over your face.
Step 4
Wash your face with warm water. Smooth the mixture over your face, avoiding the sensitive skin immediately around your eyes. Leave the mixture on your face for 15 to 20 minutes, or until it dries.
Step 5
Peel the mixture gently off your face. Remove all traces of the peel with a warm washcloth. Dry your face by patting it gently with a soft towel, and then apply your favorite moisturizer.
