How to Organize a Family Wellness Program

Managing wellness is the concept of looking at the various components of an individual's life to ensure that they are working cohesively to promote stability, balance and ultimately, good health. Your family's health or wellness is an investment that must be managed consistently. You can ensure that your family's wellness is thriving by organizing a wellness program.

Step 1

Perform a wellness assessment for your family. Evaluate your eating habits, activity levels, medical concerns or mental health needs. Gather this information for every family member.

Step 2

Develop a family eating plan. Limit eating out to special occasions or celebrations. Ask each family member to commit to eating protein, vegetables, and whole grains but be mindful of any food allergies. Drinking water on a daily basis should also be a main component of the plan. Make the grocery list as a family and find recipes that everyone can help make.

Step 3

Find opportunities for the family to exercise. Look into getting a family gym membership or working together to develop an exercise regimen that everyone can participate in. Brainstorm low cost options, such as creating an obstacle course in the driveway or doing an activity at a local park or forest preserve. Everyone in the family should commit to doing the activity on an agreed schedule (for example, two times during the week and at least once during the weekend).

Step 4

Incorporate communication into your wellness plan. Develop a schedule for family meetings and create an "open door" policy to encourage family members to communicate openly with one another. Consider finding a therapist or counselor as an impartial resource if an issue comes up that a family member doesn't feel comfortable discussing at home.

Step 5

Schedule "family time." Find an activity that the family can enjoy and participate in together. This time is strictly to have fun and catch up on what is going on with each family member. Take turns choosing the activities.
