Hitting a golf ball consistently and with a repeatable swing requires quite a bit of technique. That technique starts with taking the correct grip of the club. This is a seemingly simple task, but if it is not done the right way it becomes almost impossible to hit the golf ball correctly. The grip will ultimately become part of the golfer's signature, but it takes time to build the correct grip for most golfers because it can feel unusual when you pick up the club.
Overlapping Grip
Step 1
Take hold of the club in your left hand--if you are a right-handed golfer. The small finger on your left hand should be about 1/4-to-1/2 inch from the top of the club.
Step 2
Wrap your fingers around the club and your left thumb should go down the shaft. Place the small finger of your right hand in the gap between your left forefinger and middle finger.
Step 3
Wrap the rest of your fingers around the club. Make sure your right thumb is aligned down the shaft of the club.
Step 4
Grip the club firmly. You should be holding it at a "six" on a scale of one to 10. That's the same as a firm handshake with a business associate. The overlapping grip is the predominant grip used in the game of golf. It will help golfers hit the ball accurately
Interlocking Grip
Step 1
Take hold of the club with your left hand. You should grasp the club about 1/4 inch from the top of the grip.
Step 2
Wrap your fingers around the club. Place the small finger of your right hand underneath your left forefinger.
Step 3
Wrap the rest of the fingers on your right hand around the shaft of the club. Your thumb should go down the shaft of the club.
Step 4
Grip the club at a "six" on a scale of one to 10. The interlocking grip is used by golfers who are looking for a little bit of extra distance on their shots.
