The city of Newport News and the town of Yorktown, located approximately 13 miles north, are both situated in the state of Virginia. Yorktown is most famous as the site of the siege and surrender of General Cornwallis to General George Washington in 1781. The city of Newport News created its first exclusive off-leash dog park in 2006. Fido Field, located in Riverview Farm Park in Newport News, offers more than an acre of open space for dogs to run freely and socialize. The park is well maintained and provides two securely fenced areas: an eighth-acre area for small dogs under 20 pounds and a one-acre site for larger dogs. The park comes equipped with both doggie and owner water fountains and covered benches and is also wheelchair accessible. Special events are hosted throughout the year, including Fido Fun Day in April, featuring exhibits, demonstrations, and contests, and Yappy Hours, during which dogs and owners can meet. Walk Around the Lake
Located on Jefferson Avenue in the city of Newport News, Deer Park, once home to a white-tailed deer game preserve, features more than 13 acres of hiking trails for you and your pet to explore together. Enjoy beautiful camellias, azaleas, and rhododendron blooms on your walk around the lake in the springtime. Pets are required to remain on a leash at all times and be cleaned up after. Deer Park also provides several shaded picnic areas, a large playground for kids, ballfields, and public restrooms. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Enjoy Nature
Discover the pet-friendly, 8,000-acre Newport News Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country. The park encompasses Newport News and Yorktown and features dense woodlands, flowering meadows, and shimmering lakes and is home to a broad range of wildlife, including foxes, deer, raccoons, and otters. Enjoy camping in the park with your pet on one of the 188 well-equipped campsites, complete with hot showers, picnic tables, barbecue grills, and an on-site mini-mart. With more than 30 miles of trails, Newport News Park guarantees both you and your pet a good workout. Pets are required to remain on a leash and show a rabies vaccination upon entry. The park is open daily year-round.
Walk the Harbor
Take a brisk walk along Hampton Harbor with your pet and take in the sea air. King-Lincoln Park, located in the Yorktown area on the east of Jefferson Avenue, affords 18 pristine acres of land, featuring a natural beach, three 35-person picnic areas, playgrounds, basketball courts, and restrooms. Pets must be leashed at all times. The park is also home to the King-Lincoln Interpretative Center and includes exhibits that highlight the wildlife and ecosystems along the harbor. The center is open on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. King-Lincoln Park is open daily year-round.
Enjoy a Quick Stroll
If you just want to take the dog out for a quick walk, then head over to Beechlake Park on Longmeadow Drive in the heart of Newport News. This quaint, neighborhood, pet-friendly park features quiet wooded trails and a fresh water lake perfect for fishing, canoeing, or kayaking. All pets are required to be leashed. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
