How to Get Rid of White Spots on Nails

Your nails are a visual representation of your overall health. From time to time, you may encounter viruses or bacteria or sustain an injury that affects your health and your nails in the form of white or yellow spots on the nails. Leukonychia is a nail disorder resulting from an injury or bruising in the nailbed as well as heart disease, renal failure or the onset of an infection or illness. Although time is usually the best solution, there are things you can do to get rid of the spots and restore your nails to health.

Step 1

Apply an antifungal lacquer or anitfungal nail polish such as Ciclopirox also known as Penlac to protect the nail from external infection and to temporarily hide the white spots. A product like Ciclopirox should be applied to the nail and the skin surrounding the nail bed once a day. Each application creates a protective layer. On the seventh day, use an alcohol swab or alcohol-soaked cotton ball to remove the layers. Continue with the application on the next day.

Step 2

Apply a topical antifungal cream or lotion such as Loprox. Apply twice a day for two weeks.

Step 3

Take a prescription medication such as Diflucan or Lamisil. The white spots generally go away as the nail grows out. Growing out white spots can take a few weeks or even a few months. These medications accelerate nail growth to replace the unhealthy nail with a new healthy nail.

Step 4

Wash your hands regularly to limit exposure to bacteria.
