In the past, people would treat hair loss with herbs and massages or with a fatalistic attitude toward baldness. With the more recent introduction of medications to prevent hair loss and reduce thinning, people now have the option of taking proactive steps to defer baldness. No shampoo can make hair regrow- -dead follicles cannot be regenerated- -but the ingredients in them can work toward preventing a receding hairline. All the following products should be used only under medical supervision as the ingredients in them may not be suitable for all hair and scalp types.
Revivogen Bio Cleansing Shampoo
According to the Revivogen.com website, Revivogen has natural dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blockers, where DHT refers to a by-product of testosterone found in both males and females and which research shows can be responsible for baldness in both men and women. Active ingredients in the product are also said to activate hair follicle growth and increase the size and thickness of hair. Revivogen was launched in 1999 by Board-certified dermatologist Alex Khadavi, MD, whose own baldness led him to research DHT.
Nioxin System 3
Nioxin System 3 has BioAmp ingredient which adds thickness and strength to thinning hair. Its three system is said to cleanse, revitalize and regenerate. The set is sold with Nioxin Cleanser which removes DHT from the hair and scalp; Nioxin Scalp Therapy with soothing essential oils to moisturize the scalp; and Nioxin Scalp Treatment which prevents DHT buildup on the scalp. Nioxin does not promise hair regrowth but rather thicker hair which gives the appearance of a fuller head of hair.
HairGenesis Revitalizing, Cleansing and Thickening Shampoo
HairGenesis claims to be the original botanical hair loss remedy developed by Geno Marcovici, Ph.D. Its products are derived from 100 percent natural botanical ingredients and contain no drugs. The shampoos are designed to treat androgenic alopecia, or pattern hair loss, which is a genetic disorder. The products are supplemented with oral medication and are minoxidil free, making them suitable for both men and women.
Dermenodex Scalp Cleansing Shampoo
According to the site GreyHairLoss.com, dermenodex is used to treat thinning hair. Its main ingredient is adenosine--an approved hair growth cosmetic in Japan--used in a high concentration, and the shampoos also contain essential fatty acids, caffeine and niacin to stimulate circulation and provide nutrition to hair follicles to encourage growth.
PhytoCyane Revitalizing Shampoo
Phyto was founded by Patrick Ales, stylist to celebrities. His shampoos are infused with botanical extracts. PhytoCyane Revitalizing shampoo is targeted toward women who suffer from thinning hair due to stress, menopause, post-partum hair loss or aging. Its main active ingredients are grape seed extract, ginkgo biloba and cinchona bark extract along with provitamin B5. Its three step action plan prepares the scalp to accept nourishment; activates blood circulation using herbs like ginkgo biloba; and stimulates the scalp to encourage hair growth.
