Many people like to start the day with a nice shave, greeting the world with silky-smooth legs or a clean-cut face. Unfortunately, shaving cream cans aren't bottomless and there may come a time when you go to squirt out that luxurious foam and nothing comes out. You're left with nothing but a sad hiss of air and a face full of bristles. If this happens, don't despair--you can get a close shave with the same soap you use to scrub up at the end of the day. Just be sure to keep the lather rich and the razor sharp to avoid painful razor burn.

Step 1

Wet your face or legs with very warm water. If possible, soak in the tub or cover your face with a warm, wet washcloth for several minutes. This helps soften the hair.

Step 2

Scrub your skin with an exfoliating body wash or face cleanser. Rinse well with warm water.

Step 3

Apply soap to your hands. Rub your hands together until you achieve a rich lather. This will probably take longer with bar soap than with liquid soap. If you have a shaving brush, rub it over the soap until the ends of the bristles are covered.

Step 4

Rub the soap lather all over your face or legs with your fingers or the brush. Rub your skin in circular motions to build up the lather where you're going to shave.

Step 5

Use a sharp razor to shave in the direction of the hair growth. Rinse the razor periodically to clean off the lather.

Step 6

Continue to rub your skin to keep the lather rich in between razor strokes.

Step 7

Rinse your skin with warm water after you've shaved all the unwanted hair.

Step 8

Apply a moisturizing lotion to help counteract the drying effects of the soap.

Things You'll Need

  • Washcloth (optional)
  • Exfoliating cleanser
  • Moisturizer
