How to Start Labor for a Past Due Pregnancy

After being pregnant for nine months, most mothers are ready to meet their new baby. Doctors ideally want labor to start naturally, and that means that sometimes a woman has to continue a pregnancy a few days up to a week past her due date. There are things you can do in an attempt to induce labor. However, you should only do so under the supervision of your doctor.

Step 1

Try nipple stimulation. Gently massaging the nipples releases the hormone oxytocin. The natural release of oxytocin causes contractions.

Step 2

Consider an administration of prostaglandin. Prostaglandin is another hormone that induces labor. An administration of prostaglandin suppositories are inserted into the vagina in the evening in anticipation of inducing labor by morning. This procedure is performed in a hospital and usually takes effect in 8 to 12 hours.

Step 3

Have your doctor perform an artificial rupture of the membranes (AROM). This procedure entails using a sterile, plastic hook to break the amniotic sac.

Step 4

Determine how you feel about sexual activity. Anecdotally, it is believed that sex can induce labor. Sexual activity is typically acceptable as long as you haven't gone into labor.

Step 5

Keep your doctor updated on your health and how you feel. He may be able to make recommendations on what you can do to induce labor prior to arriving at the hospital.
