Ramps, rails and half-pipes give skateboarders the means to practice their tricks and get in hours worth of cardio at local skateboard parks. The United States has over 300 skate parks, with another 300 in development as of 2010, according to the International Association of Skateboard Companies. Mississippi is home to both indoor and outdoor skateboard park facilities.
Doc 36
Located in Jackson, Mississippi, Doc 36 offers an indoor experience for skateboarders. The street course is comprised of banks, rails, quarter pipes and hubba ledges. A mini ramp and micro ramp are also available. Skaters can watch televisions with skate videos throughout the facility.
Doc 36 welcomes skateboarders for a $10 admission fee. All skaters must sign a waiver to participate. Those under the age of 18 must have the waiver signed by a parent in the presence of a Doc 36 representative. Notarized waivers will also be considered.
Skateboarders may rent helmets, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards for a small fee. Doc 36 has a fully stocked shop where skateboarders can purchase boards and other equipment.
Centerhill Refuge Skatepark
Centerhill Refuge Skatepark in Meridian, Mississippi, is an indoor facility, which features speed-enhancing Skatelite surfacing. Skaters of all ages must wear helmets. Other protective equipment is available for rent. Skateboarders can stop in at the concession stand to refuel.
Oxford Skatepark
Oxford Skatepark in Oxford, Mississippi, is an outdoor facility that features a street course with stairs, rails, grind boxes and hubba ledges. Oxford Skatepark does not charge admission. Lights are turned off at 10 p.m. nightly.
South Coast Skatepark
This outdoor skatepark in Waveland, Mississippi, offers an advanced street course. Skateboarders enjoy pyramids, quarter pipes, staircases and pyramids. They can also rent safety equipment on-site. A skate shop is also available for the purchase of equipment.
Harrison County Skate Park
Harrison County Skate Park in Gulfport, Mississippi, invites skateboarders to use the outdoor facility's kickers, quarter pipes, ramps and rails. This park features an 8-foot concrete bowl, as well as a 5-foot half pipe. The park is free and open to the public.
