One of the most important aspects of prepping a fishing pole is properly and securely attaching the hook to the line. If you secure your hook improperly, a fish of just about any size could easily make off with your hook and bait. All anglers should know how to tie three basic fish-hook knots.
Snell Knot
The snell knot is a common way to secure the hook to the line. Insert the end of the line into the eye of the hook with a loop about 2 inches long and wrap the loop around the hook until it's almost tight. Then loop the remaining slack around the end of the hook and slowly pull the knot tight.
Clinch Knot
The clinch knot is another way of securing the line to the hook. It works particularly well for hooks that lack an 8-shaped eye. Thread the line through the hook's eye and wrap it around the end of the line about four to six complete times keeping the wrapping slack. Thread the end of the line through the first loop, so that it is outside the rest of the loops, and pull the knot tight.
Palomar Knot
The Palomar knot is a more complicated and reliable knot for securing a fishhook to your line. Thread a loop through the hook's line, bringing the curve of the loop around and through to make a loose overhead knot. Then pass the loop over the hook and pull the knot tight.
