Jock itch is an infection caused by fungus that affects the inner thighs, buttocks and genitals. It is characterized by a dry and itchy rash that covers these areas. Jock itch got its name because it generally affects athletes due to the sweat they build up, and the fungus that causes this condition flourishes in warm, wet areas. Jock itch is not a serious condition and can be taken care of with several different at-home, holistic therapies.

Cleanliness

The best thing you can do to cure a bout of jock itch (or prevent an outbreak from occurring) is to make sure you keep the affected area clean and dry. While in the shower, spend some time cleaning that area of your body. Make sure you wash it well with an antibacterial soap, such as Dial. When finished with the shower, make sure that area is as dry as possible. If need be, use a hairdryer on the affected area to dry the water there (keep it on the coolest setting, as a warm setting will cause you to sweat, which will encourage the growth of bacteria). If you do not have a hair dryer, pat down the area thoroughly with a clean towel.

Clothing

Clothing is also an important part in the fight against jock itch. First off, you must make sure your clothes fit correctly. Clothes that fit too tightly will cause irritation to the skin and cause moisture to get trapped, allowing the fungus to grow. Also, synthetic clothing may also work to cause skin issues. Your clothes should be loose fitting and made of cotton, as cotton allows air flow, which will help keep the affected area dry.

Diet

Diet is an essential part of keeping your skin healthy. As excess weight can cause you to sweat more, making sure you are eating correctly to maintain a healthy weight will help to keep your skin healthy. Also, as jock itch is a fungal infection, a good item to add to your diet is garlic. Garlic has several antifungal qualities that will aid in the treatment of jock itch. Make sure you stay away from food items such as refined carbohydrates, sugars, alcohol and yeast, and get plenty of fruits and vegetables.
