Known as the "Emerald City," Seattle is a beautiful metropolis surrounded by mountains and a waterfront that looks westward across the glittering waters of Elliott Bay and the Puget Sound and east across Lake Washington. Within these gorgeous surroundings, a bustling city bursts with entertainment opportunities. From cultural events like the opera, symphony or ballet to the more casual outdoor cinemas or pub crawling, there is something for everyone. As an added bonus, many of these activities are within walking distance or a short bus ride away from each other.
Sunset at the North End of the Waterfront
With its western facing waterfront, and the Olympic Mountains just west of the Puget Sound, Seattle has many prime locations for enjoying a beautiful sunset. At the north end of the waterfront is the Bell Street Pier, the nearby Olympic Sculpture Park and Myrtle Edwards Park. All offer fantastic views and are within walking distance of each other. Or you can check out the ultimate viewing destination, the observation deck at the top of the Space Needle. For more indulgence, make reservations in their rotating dining room that offers a full view of the city while dining. Another option is to ride a ferry across the sound and take in the view from Elliott Bay.
Pub Crawl at Pioneer Square at the South End of the Waterfront
Heading south on the waterfront by foot, bus, car, or even trolley, you'll pass within a few blocks of the famous Pike Place Market on your way to Pioneer Square. Although not actually a square, this area draws many tourists thanks to the myriad art galleries, restaurants, the Underground Seattle tour, Safeco Field home of the Mariners, Qwest Field home of the Seahawks, shopping, and of course, the pubs. Many bars and clubs charge a cover, but there a dozen or so establishments that join together and charge a joint cover, usually around $12 but subject to change. There is music for every taste and the pubs offer different ambience and drink specials. If you're in town on the first Thursday of the month, be sure to check out Pioneer Square's free art walk.
Outdoor Movies
Although Seattle is known for the rainy weather, the summer months are generally dry which brings Seattleites outdoors in droves. A popular activity in recent years is watching movies outdoors. Fremont's Outdoor Cinema was a pioneer in the movement but the Mural Amphitheatre at Seattle Center soon followed.
Performing Arts
Seattle is home to a thriving arts community. Tony award-winning companies and productions abound alongside the Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Seattle Symphony. In the summertime, look for Shakespeare in the Park and other outdoor arts opportunities, too.
Casino Hopping
On the outskirts of Seattle, you will find a number of casino-style opportunities. From mini-casinos and poker rooms to the full-blown lavish Tribal casinos, there is a card game for everyone. That is everyone over 18, and in some cases, 21. Blackjack, Pai Gow, Let it Ride, Caribbean Stud, Spanish 21, Roulette, Craps, slot machines, pull-tabs, off-track betting and more are available.
