Raw food diets have been gaining a lot of popularity over the past few years. They are characterized by foods that are either completely raw or have been minimally heated by way of dehydration. People who eat this way are called "raw foodists," and they aim to eat primarily organic foods. If you choose to follow a diet like this, there are several foods you will want to add to your grocery list.

Fruits

Fruits make up a big portion of the raw food diet. It is not uncommon for a person to eat three or more pieces of fruit in one sitting when following a raw diet. They are also used to make fresh juices, and they are sliced up and dehydrated as well. Add apples, bananas, pears, strawberries, grapes, oranges, lemons and avocados to your shopping list.

Vegetables

Vegetables are in the same boat as fruit for their versatility. They are also used as is, they are dehydrated and they are used in juices, and raw soups and sauces. Add tomatoes, zucchini, celery, cucumbers, carrots, beets, leafy greens and sprouts to your list.

Nuts

Nuts are high in unsaturated fats, and they also have protein and fiber. They are eaten raw instead of roasted and they can be ground up into nut butters. Examples of these include macadamia nuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews and Brazil nuts.

Seeds

Seeds are similar to nuts in that they contain unsaturated fats and they are also sources of fiber and protein. Get raw sesame seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Legumes

Legumes are seeds that have a pod surrounding them. Beans are a type of legume that you want to add to your grocery list. These can be soaked in water in containers to help sprout them and make them edible. Examples are mung beans, aduki beans, black beans, lima beans, chickpeas and lentils.

Grains

Grains are high in fiber and they have a moderate amount of protein. They can also be sprouted and used in a raw food diet, so they should be added to your shopping list. Examples are wheat berries, barley, spelt, rye and buckwheat.

Miscellaneous

There are some foods whose raw versions you might want to add, depending on how strict you are. Examples of these are raw milk, raw cheese, sashimi and caviar.
