Most women have some cellulite--or fat that looks like dimpled skin around the hips, buttocks and thighs--according to the Mayo Clinic. Although cellulite isn't dangerous, it may cause you to feel insecure about going outside while wearing short shorts or swim bottoms. If you're trying to treat your cellulite, know that most products, medicines and treatments won't get rid of cellulite permanently. However, some treatments and lifestyle changes can help mask it or temporarily reduce its appearance.
Step 1
Lose weight. Cutting back on junk food and getting regular exercise to drop pounds and strengthen the muscles in your hips, buttocks and thighs is the best way to reduce the appearance of cellulite, according to the Mayo Clinic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that you should do muscle-strengthening activities twice a week and get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity every week. However, since you may require more, talk to your doctor about how much exercise you should get to lose weight.
Step 2
Apply a self-tanner. Since cellulite is generally less noticeable on darker skin, the Nemours Foundation recommends using a self-tanning product to help conceal your cellulite. Follow the ingredient's instructions carefully to prevent an uneven skin tone. Avoid sitting in the sun or lying in a tanning bed for the same results, because they can lead to aging skin and skin cancer.
Step 3
Ask your doctor about lasers and radio frequency systems. Both systems can improve cellulite after a series of twice-weekly treatments, says the Mayo Clinic. However, results only last about six months so you would need to get them over and over if you wanted to get rid of cellulite permanently.
Step 4
Get a massage. Vigorous massage may increase blood flow, reduce excess fluid in areas that are prone to cellulite and remove toxins from the skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. A method known as Endermology, or lipomassage, involves kneading the skin between rollers of a handheld machine. Although you may notice a slight improvement, the Mayo Clinic mentions that its results are generally temporary.
