Aciphex is type of drug known as a proton pump inhibitor. According to Drugs.com, Aciphex treats symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and erosive esophagitis. Doctors may also prescribe Aciphex in conjunction with other medications for the treatment of stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori. There are some side effects associated with Aciphex 20 mg.
Headache and Fever
Some patients may develop headache and fever while taking Aciphex 20 mg. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to Aciphex. Patients who experience a headache or mild fever should consult their doctor regarding the use of an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen for relief. A fever that persists or worsens, or is accompanied by fatigue, swollen lymph glands, sore throat, or cough can be a sign of a bacterial infection rather than a side effect, which may require medical treatment.
Nausea and Diarrhea
Aciphex 20 mg may cause nausea and diarrhea. Taking Aciphex with food or milk may help to lessen these effects. Patients who experience diarrhea should increase their daily fluid intake to prevent the development of dehydration, which can lead to additional complications. Severe diarrhea should be brought to the attention of a physician. An alternate dosage or medication may be recommended.
Insomnia
Some patients taking Aciphex 20 mg may develop insomnia. Insomnia is a difficulty falling or staying asleep for a full night. Some natural ways to induce sleep may include a warm bath, decaffeinated herbal tea, or meditation. Insomnia that becomes bothersome should be brought to the attention of a physician. Doctors may prescribe a sleep aid for occasional relief from insomnia.
Skin Rash
A skin rash may develop in patients taking Aciphex. This rash may or may not itch. In some cases, an increased sensitivity to the sun can occur. Users may want to avoid being in the direct sunlight if skin rash occurs. The use of protective clothing and sunblock may be helpful. An over-the-counter medicated skin cream, such as one that contains cortisone, may help to diminish skin rash and relieve itching.
