The Definition of Androstenedione

Androstenedione is a supplement that was used in the past by bodybuilders and other athletes to increase muscle mass and strength. It has since been banned in the United States for safety concerns.

Uses

Androstenedione is marketed as an alternative to anabolic steroids, PDR Health explains. It is used to help build muscle mass, improve endurance and athletic performance and to increase strength. It is also able to increase testosterone levels and can be taken orally.

Mechanism

Androstenedione is classified as a steroid precursor by the Food and Drug Administration. This means that although it is not itself a steroid, it can be converted into one by the body. Once androstenedione is in the body, it is converted into testosterone.

Legality

Androstenedione has been banned by the Food and Drug Administration for sale in the United States. It was banned because of concerns about quality and regulation, as well as the chance that this supplement could lead to serious health problems when taken regularly.

Risks

In men, use of androstenedione can lead to testicular atrophy, breast enlargement and impotence. Women can develop male secondary sexual characteristics such as facial hair, deepening of the voice and male pattern baldness. They may also have an increased risk of developing endometrial and breast cancer.
