There are several products geared toward helping black men overcome specific skin conditions. Black men have skin care needs that might differ from men of other races because of differences in pigmentation, oil production and hair growth. For serious skin problems, such as prolonged dryness or irritation, it is recommended that you visit a licensed dermatologist for proper treatment.

Depilatory Products

One of the most common ailments affecting black men is razor bumps. Razor bumps are caused when facial hair curves back under the skin during shaving. This causes ingrown hairs, swelling and irritation. One solution is to use a depilatory cream or shaving powder, containing substances such as calcium thioglycolate. These products function by dissolving the keratin of hair, according to a joint research study conducted by L'Oreal and Howard University. Research subjects demonstrated less papule formation on their face from using depilatory cream than conventional shaving. Skin also appeared and felt smoother. Depilatory creams and powders may cause irritation.

Skin-Lightening Creams

Skin-lightening creams are designed to reduce the appearance of uneven pigmentation, such as brown spots or blemishes. According to the University of South Florida's Dermatology Blog, these products are safe when used for a short-term. Over-the-counter creams contain steroids that thin the skin or hydroquinone, a potent chemical that interferes with the skin's pigmentation. Abuse of these products can be very harmful. Effects include darkening and thickening of the skin, high blood pressure and stretch marks. Skin-lightening creams should not be used over large areas of the face and body as they are designed to address small trouble spots.

Mandelic Cleansers

Mandelic acid is an antibacterial chemical derived from almonds. LNE & Spa, a magazine for skin care and spa professionals, recommends black men use cleansers containing this acid to treat impacted pores. Before shaving. take a hot shower and apply the cleanser instead of shaving cream. To reduce inflammation after shaving, apply an aloe vera conditioning lotion if desired. At night, use a mandelic scrub to further release impactions and kill bacteria. This regimen will lessen problems such as hyperpigmentation caused by acne, as the mandelic acid deep cleans and lifts blotchy pigment. For serious or stubborn skin conditions, a dermatologist should be consulted.
