Handlebar grips for bikes come in a wide variety of shapes, textures, materials and colors. Finding grips that fit your bike and your hands, as well as your needs and personality as a rider, enhance the biking experience. Since your hands are always in contact with your bike, you want them to be comfortable, and there are many different options to choose from.
Step 1
Remove the end plugs from your handlebars if your bike has them.
Step 2
Use a flathead screwdriver to pry some space between the old grips and the handlebars.
Step 3
Spray WD-40, or similar lubricating agent, into the opening to loosen the grips.
Step 4
Manually pull off the old grips, turning them to spread the WD-40 if you have difficulty.
Step 5
Wipe off the excess WD-40.
Step 6
Spray a small amount of hairspray into the new grips and on the handlebars.
Step 7
Push the new grips on to the handlebars, applying pressure and twisting if necessary until they're in the right position for your hands.
Tips and Warnings
- If you do not have WD-40, other lubricants such as Vaseline, Pledge or butter can be used. Loosen the gear-shifting mechanisms and the hand-brake and slide them down the handlebar away from the area where you will be working.
- Be aware of any mechanical parts such as your hand brakes and gear shifters when you are working with WD-40 and a screwdriver. A slip of the hand could damage these important parts of your bicycle.
