Children's shoe sizes depend primarily on the length of their feet, although shoe sizes aren't well-standardized. Different parts of the world have use different shoe sizing systAt ems, and also measure length in different units. The shoe sizing system in the United States is generally a number between one and thirteen and requires you to measure your child's foot in inches. A child's shoe size also varies by manufacturer and the style of the shoe.
Step 1
Place a regular pair of socks on your child's feet.
Step 2
Instruct your child to stand if she's capable of doing so. Ensure that her feet are flat against the floor and her toes are uncurled.
Step 3
Measure both of your child's feet in inches from the end of the heel to the tip of the big toe. Select the larger of these two measurements.
Step 4
Determine your child's shoe size from the manufacturer's sizing chart if available. Many manufacturers provide a specific size chart that relates foot length to shoe size.
Step 5
Calculate your child's generic shoe size if no specific sizing chart is available. You can calculate your child's generic shoe size in the United States with the formula S = (3 x L) - 9.5, where the S is the shoe size and L is the length of your child's foot in inches. Round this result to the nearest half of a whole number.
Let your child's foot be 6 in. long for this example. Your child's shoe size is therefore (3 x 6) - 9.5 = 8.5, or 8 ½.
