The game of football is the most popular sport in North America. The game requires an offensive team to run or pass the ball into the opponent's endzone and it requires the defensive team to stop the offense. The key to an offensive team's production is strong blocking by offensive linemen. The key to stopping the offense is strong tackling by the defense. Football teams use complicated plays and formations, but more often than not the team that outhits and outworks its opponent wins the game.

Step 1

Block your opponent when you are on offense by getting your shoulder into his midsection. By getting low to start out and driving with all the force you can muster you can push your opponent backwards and knock him down. This will give a running back, quarterback or receiver a chance to run through the hole that you created.

Step 2

Throw the ball to the open receiver. The modern game of football is dominated by the forward pass. When receivers know where they are going and the defense does not, the offense has an advantage. The quarterback can throw the ball to an open receiver to make a big play.

Step 3

Pressure the quarterback when playing defense. No matter how good the defensive backs are who cover the wide receivers are, the quarterback will almost always find an open receiver if he is given enough time. The defensive linemen and the linebackers must try to tackle the quarterback by tossing aside the men who are trying to block them. Once they do that, they have to put their hands up to deflect or alter the pass of the ball. If they can get their hands on the quarterback, they must throw him to the ground.

Step 4

Drive your shoulder into the midsection of the ball carrier and then wrap your arms around him to tackle him. Tackling well is essential for any player who wants to make an impact on defense. lt is not just about throwing your shoulder into somebody's upper body. You must wrap him up with your arms.

Step 5

Catch the ball with your hands when you are a receiver. Do not let the ball get into your body. If you do that, the ball will bounce off your shoulder pads and will be difficult to catch. The best receivers form a triangle by putting their thumbs and forefingers together to give the quarterback a target and then catching the ball and bringing it into their body.
