According to the World Health Organization, swine flu, also known as H1N1, is a contagious respiratory infection. It is caused by the influenza type A virus that was first recognized in 2009. Originally, scientific laboratories indicated the similarities to the flu viruses in pigs. However, further study showed the viruses to be different. Swine flu is transmitted through the air as humans sneeze or cough. After a swine flu diagnosis, your doctor can prescribe anitviral drugs to prevent further complications. Laboratory testing is required for an accurate swine flu diagnosis.

Recognize the Signs

Symptoms of the swine flu include sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, chills, fever, body aches and fatigue. Swine flu symptoms develop up to five days after virus exposure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends visiting a medical professional if a person exhibit signs associated with the swine flu.

Visit the Doctor

Normally, doctors consult with patients before testing to identify signs and symptoms relating to the condition. Doctors collect laboratory samples by inserting a swab down the throat, up the nose or using a nose aspirator. Afterwards, he will collect and deposit the specimen in a medical tube before forwarding it to a testing facility for examination. The doctor will also prescribe medications to treat certain symptoms until the results return.

Wait for the Test Results

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, swine flu test results generally take 24 to 48 hours to return. The medical laboratory utilizes an influenza antigen test to scan for the swine flu virus and confirm infection. Usually, the doctor will notify patients to return and discuss lab results. If a swine flu test returns positive, the doctor will prescribe a treatment plan, usually including the H1N1 vaccine, to minimize symptoms and infection.
