Straightening thick hair can take a long time, but can be done with the appropriate styling tools. The difference between straightening thick and thin hair can be drastic. Some hair types based on ethnicity and genetics are twice as thick and can take approximately 2 hours to straighten. Use a flat iron tool to slowly straighten hair. Results can last several days if hair is not washed.
Step 1
Wash and condition hair using a shampoo designed for thick hair. Towel dry hair by squeezing out excess water. Rub hair gently. Allow hair to air dry, or use a blow dryer on a low setting. Ensure hair is completely dry.
Step 2
Turn on the flat iron to the highest setting. Spray hair evenly with a solution specifically made to straighten hair. Comb hair with a wide-toothed comb. Divide hair into several sections and clip in place. Leave bottom of hair loose.
Step 3
Grip section of hair with a flat iron near the root of the hair, close to the scalp. Press the iron together and slowly slide it down the hair. Repeat one or two times. Sections should be no larger than 2 inches.
Step 4
Continue around the head, releasing new sections from clips and straightening hair. Spray with hairspray for additional hold after each section has been ironed with the flat iron. Finger comb hair or use a wide-toothed comb.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid washing hair for several days to keep hair straight.
- Do not keep flat iron on hair for too long, as the iron can burn or melt hair away. One to 3 seconds is ample time.
