Natural Ingrown Hair Remedies

Ingrown hairs are caused by shaving too closely to the skin and the hair follicle becoming obstructed. The hair continues to grow, but it does so at an angle, burying itself inside the skin and causing a raised red bump to appear. The area may become infected and tender to the touch. Ingrown hairs last from one to two weeks and are common on the face, bikini line and leg areas. A variety of natural holistic treatments can be applied to the skin to draw out the hair. Ingredients are common over-the-counter products, as well as items found in most kitchens.

Wash Daily

Using an antibacterial soap, cleanse the infected area daily. Look for soaps that contain 10 percent benzoyl peroxide. Do not over-cleanse because the skin can become dry.

Clay Mask

Apply natural cosmetic clay powder, which can be found at many health food stores. Mix it with a few drops of eucalyptus oil and apply to the area at night. Rinse off the clay in the morning. Repeat for three to four days. Redness and swelling will gradually decrease.

Cucumber Rinse

Peel one cucumber and mix it to a thick paste using a kitchen blender. Add one-third cup of milk. Chill for 20 minutes. Soak a clean washcloth or cotton ball in the solution. Add to the inflamed area as needed to relieve itchiness.

Witch Hazel Cleanser

Apply witch hazel after shaving to deeply clean pores and hair follicles. The solution is commonly found in grocery or drug stores near the first-aid supplies. Witch hazel is a natural astringent or toner that will disinfect skin.

Tweezing

Only pull out ingrown hairs if the hair is visible and if they appear on the face. Infection and scarring can occur. If the tip of the hair is visible, attempt to quickly loosen and remove the hair. The experience will be more painful than when you regularly use tweezers. Clean the area thoroughly with antibacterial soap and apply witch hazel for several days after the hair has been removed.
