Titusville, Florida, affectionately nicknamed the Space Coast, is famous for its shuttle launches. It also happens to have a multitude of scenic waterways to paddle and fish. Depending on the location, anglers may catch freshwater and saltwater fish in this area. For anglers wanting plenty of fishing options and a workout, kayak fishing in Titusville is good choice.

Coastal Kayak Fishing

Sea kayak fishing is an option for saltwater fishers. Canaveral National Seashore offers many lagoons for anglers to fish undisturbed. Mosquito Lagoon, which was voted by Outside Magazine as "one of the top ten places to paddle in the U.S.," and Indian River Lagoon are connected to this seashore. The "big four" saltwater fish species in this area are redfish, spotted sea trout, snook, and tarpon. Fishing in these lagoons is not affected by the tide because of their distance from the ocean. However, kayaking anglers will want to monitor temperatures. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best time for fishing in summer when the temperatures are cooler. The waters of the lagoon area are protected, so paddlers do not have negotiate the water with motorboats.

Freshwater fishing

There is also rewarding freshwater fishing in Titusville, Florida. St. Johns River and Fox Lake are popular fishing spots in the area and open to kayaks. These spots have a myriad of fish species including, largemouth bass, bluegills, redear sunfish, crappies and catfish. For bass fishing, St. Johns River is known to produce large fish, up to 10 lbs. St. Johns River is 3 miles west of Titusville. Fox Lake is located in Fox Lake Park in the city of Titusville. Both locations have boat ramps that are easily accessible.

Fishing Regulations

A number of species in Florida have a daily bag and length limit. Panfish, for example, are limited to 50 per individual. Daily bag limit and limitations on length may also vary on species and area you are fishing (see reference FWC). For example, in the St. Johns River Management Area, located on Farm 13, and the Indian River, black bass must be released immediately. Florida resident anglers must purchase either an annual, five year, or lifetime fishing license. Freshwater and saltwater fishing licenses can be purchased separately or as a set. Visitors to Florida may purchase a non-resident license three days, seven days, or 12 months. Children under 16 are not required to have a fishing license.

Many waterways in Titsuville are protected, especially in the wetlands, creeks, and marshes. Be especially careful not damaged or remove and plants or animals from these areas or you may receive a fine or even jail time. Always wear protective gear when paddling. Wear a life jacket even if you are an experienced paddler and strong swimmer.
