Successful graduation from high school is an important achievement in the life of a teenager. Alternative schools provide a way for teenagers facing serious challenges in their lives to finish school and move on to either college or the workforce. There are several alternative schools in Indiana providing parents and their children with educational options that lead to success.

Opportunites

The Indianapolis Public School District offers 60 alternative educational programs for students who are not succeeding in a regular classroom setting, and there are almost 300 alternative schools in the state. Middle and high school students with challenges in their lives can take advantage of these programs, and get their lives back on track by entering a program that leads to high school graduation.

Positive Growth

Alternative education programs are designed to help you learn in a positive environment that does not discriminate against you because of the challenges you are facing in life. Students in alternative education programs are expected to take the responsibility for the success of their own program. Your program will be designed to meet your specific academic needs, and you will be instructed in an manner that provides you with all the support you need to be successful.

State Mandates

State regulations specify that alternative school classrooms have a low student-to-teacher ratio. There should be no more that 15 students for each teacher. Available programs must have flexibility in scheduling, and the instructional methods should be tailored to take advantage of the way you learn best. Many factors are used to determine eligibility, such as having failing grades, needing to work to pay your family's bills or having a child. Any situation that would be incompatible with a traditional school setting will be considered.

Disabled Students

Alternative education is not just for students with lifestyle challenges, but also for students with physical and learning disabilities. Educators at alternative schools endeavor to create an atmosphere where students with any limitation can be successful academically and experience an environment of social acceptance. When you are in a school with teachers who care for your emotional well-being, you have the opportunity to experience the joy of learning all over again.

Boarding School

Parents with teenagers facing serious life struggles may need to consider the alternative of a boarding school program designed to build discipline and confidence in the life of a young person. Teenagers having difficulty responding positively to authority, or being influenced in a negative way by friends, may be perfect candidates for a boarding school program. At a well-designed program, teenagers will be under the direction of caring professionals who know exactly how to deal with all the pressures that teenagers face in life.
