The best ski equipment blends functionality with fashion. When packing ski equipment for a vacation or purchasing ski equipment, you must choose how important functionality is compared to how it looks. Skiing with improper equipment can make for a terrible experience. Most ski equipment is optional, especially attire, but the basics of the sport are necessary for all ability levels, like skis, boots and poles. The type of equipment you choose for your vacation should also factor in where you are going and the climate at that location.

Step 1

Measure your height, arm length, boot size and waist size. This will help with choosing the right clothing, boots and skis.

Step 2

Determine your ability level. According to Amenta.com, there are nine ability levels, and the first four levels stay on the green runs which are the easiest. The next three levels can comfortably ski the more difficult blue runs and the final two can do black diamond runs. Your ability level factors in to the equipment you choose.

Step 3

Check the weather reports to find out what type of weather is likely at your destination. Choose appropriate clothing for cold, wind, sun or snow.

Step 4

Assess the snow situation and choose appropriate equipment. According to the ABC of Snowboarding website, there is powder, crud, crust, slush and ice. Sharper edges and thicker clothing are required if you will be skiing in slush or ice.

Step 5

Visit skiing websites to find if there are extra pieces of equipment that can make your experience more enjoyable.

Tips and Warnings

  • Beginner skiers should be less focused on equipment and more focused on learning the fundamentals. Make sure your equipment is in working condition and is maintained.
  • Skiing without a helmet puts you at risk of suffering head injuries. Wearing the wrong size clothing or equipment can be detrimental to skiing correctly.
