How to Prepare a Job Evaluation

One of the most important things in an person's job is the yearly job evaluation. This event gives employers and employees a chance to get together and talk about the employee's performance, the employer's role in that performance, and goals for both parties in the upcoming year. Because the job evaluation is not a one-sided event, you as the employee must prepare for the evaluation as thoroughly as your boss does.

Step 1

Read over your last year's job evaluation to remember what you and your boss talked about the year previous. Review the list of goals and accomplishments you wanted to accomplish over the past year.

Step 2

Write out an actual list of accomplishments you did over the past year. Compare this list with the past performance review to see how close you came to your goals.

Step 3

Review your job description to determine how close to performing the duties which are listed. Note which expectations you exceeded, met and fell short on. Write out reasons why you may have not performed all the duties in your job description and discuss that with your boss.

Step 4

Compile a list of areas where you think you need improvement. This exercise will allow you to get a well-rounded sense of how you actually perform your job. Don't try to hide these areas from your boss. It will show character if you can bring these things to your manager and ask for help in improvement.

Step 5

Research things that may have helped you perform your job over the last year, such as classes, conferences, technology, and determine if any of these can be an option to help your efficiency in the next year. Present a list to your manager.

Step 6

List out goals for the following year. These goals can encompass things your like to accomplish in your job and as an employee of the company. This can be anything from taking on more duties outside your sphere of influence or angling for that promotion. Let your manager know what you would like to accomplish and ask her how she can help you. Come up with a plan together.

  • Preparation is key to any job evaluation. The most successful evaluations occur when they contain evaluations from the employer and employee.Take a couple of hours and prepare for this annual event.
  • Don't get too cocky or overbearing in your job evaluation. Give a realistic look at your effort and prepare the good and bad about the job and your performance. By being overbearing, you may come off as cocky or insincere, which can ruin the chance to have an open dialogue.
