Pilates is an exercise method designed to use your mind as well as your body. Proper exercise technique, putting your mind to your muscle, keeps your thoughts trained on the movement and eliminates distractions. Breathing is part of the workout as your breath is synchronized with each movement working through a full range of motion. There are different types of Pilates workouts available on tapes for home use. Benefits of participating in Pilates training include increased strength and flexibility, along with improved posture and muscle tone without excess bulk.

"Method Pilates"

The "Method Pilates Series" tapes are based on the original Pilates exercise technique developed by Joseph Pilates in 1921. It is important to use correct form and focus on your body's response to the movements. The Method Core Ball workout uses an 8 lb. core ball. The workout targets your upper body and your core muscles--the abdomen and lower back muscles. There are three sections and a bonus Ab Blast. The workout focuses on strengthening your body and your mind.

"Stott Pilates"

The "Stott Pilates" series is a refined version of the original Pilates workout. The Stott workout techniques feature an increased focus on spinal strength, pelvic placement and athletic development. It is often used for rehabilitation purposes. There are many modifications offered for various fitness levels. The workout consists of a dynamic series of movements using resistance equipment. The Amazing Body tape uses a flex band to tone and sculpt your arms, legs, back and torso.

"Winsor Pilates"

The "Mari Winsor's Pilates" series stresses the basics of Pilates. There is considerable instruction and demonstration for beginner-level participants. Using cuing techniques, the workouts are easy to follow. The "Exhale: Core Fusion Body Sculpt" tape provides a full-body toning workout using five 10-minute segments. Each segment focuses on a specific muscle group. No equipment other than a mat is required. The exercises use your body weight as resistance.

"Pilates on the Ball"

The "Ten Minute Solution: Pilates on the Ball" tape uses a stability ball for added intensity. The stability ball allows you to contract your muscles to stabilize your body while working through a full range of motion. The tape consists of five 10-minute sessions targeting each muscle group. The instructor uses a great deal of cuing and demonstration for participants of various fitness levels.
