Since most commercial cleaning products contain harmful toxins and environmental pollutants, you may be looking for cleaning tools that are green and safe for the environment. You probably already have some of the best, green cleaning tools already stored away in your pantry. You can even experiment and combine these natural, green substances to get the cleaning results you need. Once you understand the different uses of some of these safe, everyday products, you will be able to keep you home clean without damaging the planet.

White Vinegar

White vinegar has mild acidic properties that break down soap scum, dirt and hard water deposits. White vinegar is also a natural deodorizer that helps eliminate tough odors. You can make a solution in a spray bottle of one part white vinegar and one part water for general cleaning on hard kitchen and bathroom surfaces. Use full-strength vinegar to remove stubborn stains and deposits on plumbing fixtures.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Use isopropyl-or rubbing-alcohol to add shine to chrome, windows and mirrors. Make your own green glass cleaner by combining 1 cup of water, 1 cup isopropyl alcohol and 1 tbsp. white vinegar in a spray bottle.

Baking Soda

Baking soda absorbs odors and is mildly abrasive. You can make a paste with water and baking soda to apply to tough stains in the kitchen or bathroom. After leaving the paste on for about 10 to 20 minutes, scrub with a damp sponge. To freshen and deodorize your carpet, sprinkle baking soda directly on the carpet and vacuum after 20 minutes.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a fresh-smelling, natural substance you can dilute with water and spray to dissolve soap scum and hard water build-up. To polish furniture, mix 1/2 cup lemon juice with 1 cup olive oil in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto a cleaning rag and wipe the surface. Polish with a dry cloth to bring out the shine.
