Food writer and historian, Nancy Harmon Jenkins presents a collection of classic recipes from the Mediterranean region in "The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook: A Delicious Alternative for Lifelong Health." Through recipes based on whole and natural foods, Jenkins' first cookbook explores the flavors of the Mediterranean.

Cuisine

Drawing from the large region around the sea, recipes in the book come from France, Italy, Spain, Greece, North Africa, Lebanon, and Cyprus. The selection is designed to give readers healthy, flavorful recipes using the basic tenants of the Mediterranean kitchen. Recipes are based on classic Mediterranean dishes but Jenkins adds slight adaptations for American kitchens because some authentic ingredients and tools may be hard to find.

Health benefits

According to Jenkins, a diet comprised of "fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and legumes, breads, fish, and small amounts of very lean meats" is the healthiest choice. The recipes are based on ingredients that are "rich in flavor and health-promoting antioxidants, but low in saturated fats and cholesterol, the Mediterranean diet has for centuries been one of the healthiest in the world."

Price

"The Mediterranean Cookbook" is available from various online retailers. As of 2010, the cost typically runs between $7 and $35 from various sellers on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com. A revised edition of the book, "The New Mediterranean Cookbook" is also available.
