Sugars, starches and dietary fibers are components of carbohydrates. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, a sugar-free food is not necessarily carbohydrate-free. Carbohydrate- and sugar-free foods provide equal to or less than .5 g of each nutrient per serving. There are some beverages, protein-rich foods and condiments that are carbohydrate-free and sugar-free.

Beverages

Your body is made up of approximately 60 percent water---thus it has many functions, such as lubricating joints and serving as the medium for chemical reactions to take place. Water is free of carbohydrates and sugar, but it is not the only beverage or fluid that fits that criteria. Diet soda, coffee, tea, broth and certain distilled spirits or alcoholic beverages are also free of carbohydrates and sugar, such as 80-proof gin, vodka, rum and/or whiskey.

Meats, Fish and Eggs

Plain protein-rich meats, such as beef, chicken, turkey, fish and eggs are free of carbohydrates and sugar. Examples of specific types and cuts in this category include ground beef patties, lean top-round steak, turkey or chicken breast and many types of fish and shellfish, such as tuna, sole, whitefish and shrimp. Be aware that adding sauces, breading or condiments can add carbohydrate and sugars. Protein is necessary to build cells, tissues and muscles in the body, as well as skin and hair.

Fats, Oils and Condiments

Many fats, such as butter, margarine and shortening, are carbohydrate- and sugar-free. All oils, such as olive, peanut, sesame, corn, canola, soybean and safflower oils are as well. Fats and oils, particularly unsaturated liquid oils, help the body absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and keep hair healthy and shiny. Certain condiments, such as mayonnaise and mustard as well as many herbs and spices, such as dill, oregano, parsley, ginger and cloves also are free of carbohydrates and sugar.
