Chinese herbal medicine has been practiced for thousands of years. There are many Chinese herbs that come prepackaged for easier buying. These prepackaged Chinese herbs can be bought in herb stores, retail markets, online and through some direct mail merchants. Before starting your own herbal remedy program, always check with a doctor first.

Danshen

Danshen is a traditional Chinese medicine that can be taken alone or in combination with other herbs. It reduces blood clots, according to MedlinePlus, but hasn't been proved to improve circulation. There have been clinical trials testing danshen for burn healing, angina, prostatitis, asthmatic bronchitis, glaucoma and kidney disease. These trials have resulted in mixed results. Potential side effects include allergy, itching, stomach upset, bleeding and reduced appetite.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a Chinese medicine herbal remedy that has been studied for heart conditions, high blood sugar, diabetes and immune system boosting. All of these conditions have been shown to have improvements with ginseng usage. For heart conditions especially, ginseng has been shown to lower bad cholesterol oxidation, according to MedlinePlus. Possible side effects include allergy, itching, anxiety, insomnia, diarrhea, sore throat and loss of appetite.

Astragalus

Astragalus, or Huang Qi, is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that is used for liver ailments and the immune system. It is frequently packaged in with other herbs. Other uses for astragalus include cancer remedies, heart disease, colds, and upper respiratory diseases. There are not many clinical trials for huang qi, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or NCCAM. Potential side effects include blood pressure and blood sugar fluctuations. Talk to a doctor before taking atralagus for any condition.

Thunder God Vine

Thunder god vine has been used in China for hundreds of years for such ailments as inflammation and immune system dysfunctions. Clinical trials have shown some promise for its use in inflammation, especially with rheumatoid arthritis, according to NCCAM. Potential side effects include headache, diarrhea, hair loss, upset stomach, skin rashes, and menstrual irregularities. Don't take thunder god vine without your doctor's approval.

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is a food and medicinal plant, typically used in salads or as a vegetable. Medicinally, it has sedative, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and tonic effects. Gotu kola reduces fevers, aids in immune system boosting, reduces inflammations, and helps with the nervous system and memory. According to Plants for a Future, the herb loses potency quickly and should always be used fresh. Before you take gotu kola, talk to a doctor.
