A regular part of skateboard maintenance includes lubricating your wheel bearings. A skateboard bearing consists of a set of small ball bearings set in a plastic cage. The cage fits into a metal shell with a plastic cover that removes easily to allow you to apply lubricant to the ball bearings. This keeps the bearings turning freely and helps to reduce wear from dirt and grime. With the right tools and a good skateboard bearing lubricant, you can keep your skateboard bearings running well.

Step 1

Unscrew the nut on the axle that holds the wheel in place with the socket wrench. Pull the wheel off the axle.

Step 2

Insert the point of the pushpin between the metal edge of the skateboard bearing and the plastic shield that covers the face of the bearing. Pry the shield loose from the bearing to expose the ball bearings inside. Leave the ball bearings in the skateboard bearing. Check the ball bearings for dirt and clean them if necessary.

Step 3

Place two or three drops of lubricant on the ball bearings. Pop the shield back into the skateboard bearing.

Step 4

Lubricate the bearing on the other side of the wheel, using the same process. Put the skateboard wheel back on the axle and replace the nut to secure the wheel. Turn the wheel to distribute the lubricant in the bearings.

Step 5

Repeat this process on each skateboard wheel.

Things You'll Need
