Prilosec is the brand name of the drug omeprazole, which is used to treat heartburn, ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive esophagitis, according to MedlinePlus. It works by reducing the amount of stomach acid. The drug is available in prescription and over-the-counter versions and is usually taken daily for a set period of time depending on the condition being treated. It is not used for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms but to treat the underlying cause of the problem.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects of omeprazole are stomach or back pain, constipation, diarrhea, lightheadedness and cough, according to MedlinePlus. If these symptoms are severe or don't go away on their own, a doctor should be consulted.

Serious Side Effects

According to MedlinePlus, these symptoms are signs of a serious problem that warrants immediate medical attention: rash; itching; swelling anywhere on the face or head or elsewhere on the body; trouble breathing or swallowing; hoarseness; seizures; muscle problems including spasms, aching or cramping; and burning or tingling in the lips, tongue, hands or feet.

Fracture Risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, warns that omeprazole may increase the risk of bone fractures in the hip, wrist or spine. The risk appears greatest for those who take high doses of the prescription drug or use it for more than a year. The warning applies to all proton pump inhibitors, the class of drugs to which omeprazole belongs. The FDA suggests that patients talk to their doctors about limiting their dose or the duration of their therapy when possible to minimize the risk. Over-the-counter products should not be taken for more than 14 days at a time.

Signs of Overdose

It is possible to have a dangerous overdose on these drugs, according to MedlinePlus. The symptoms include confusion, sleepiness, blurry vision, a pounding heart, nausea, vomiting, sweating, flushing, headache and dry mouth. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.
