Many people choose to have laser eye surgery, such as Lasik, a refractive surgery that helps decrease a person's dependence on prescription glasses or contact lenses. These surgeries often require one or more incisions in the eye, typically the cornea---the front, clear outer dome of the eye. If you have surgery, the doctor will discuss the length of time for the surgical wound to heal. He may recommend not swimming for a certain length of time or adjusting the way you swim or spend time near the water.

Step 1

Wear swim goggles if you think water may splash into your eyes. Do not dip the goggles into unsterilized water to clean or prevent fogging. Fresh water and sea water contain microorganisms that may infect the wound. Chlorine in pools may cause irritation and slow wound healing.

Step 2

Avoid submerging your head under water, even when wearing swim goggles. This will lessen the chances for infection or irritation of the wound.

Step 3

Inform family and friends that you cannot get water in your eyes. This may help protect your eyes from an unexpected splash of water or dunk in the pool.

Step 4

Sit at the edge of the pool or body of water. Though not as fun, this may offer the best protection for your healing eyes.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you spend a lot of time swimming during the summer months, plan your surgery for the beginning of winter. This gives your eyes a chance to heal before the swimming season begins.
  • If you experience any changes in vision or eye comfort, contact your eye surgeon for an examination.

Things You'll Need
