Changing a baby's diaper can be challenging in the beginning; however, with practice it will become second nature to parents. A baby may require 10 or more diaper changes on a daily basis, according to the KidsHealth website. Frequent diaper changes are important to prevent skin irritation or diaper rash.
Step 1
Prepare the changing area by placing a changing pad or blanket down on the surface where you are going to change the diaper and gather all the items needed before lying the baby down in the area.
Step 2
Unfasten one diaper tab from the front of the diaper and refasten the tab to the original position on the back part of the diaper. This will prevent the fastener from sticking to her skin. Perform the same step for the opposite side.
Step 3
Use the front portion of the diaper to wipe from front to back if he had a bowel movement; otherwise, tuck the front portion under his bottom to prepare for cleaning. If you are changing a boy, place a cloth diaper or washcloth over his penis to prevent urine from spraying everywhere in case of an accident.
Step 4
Wipe the area with a wet wipe or a warm washcloth to cleanse the area and to help prevent skin irritation.
Step 5
Lift both legs using your hand and slightly lift her bottom up while removing the diaper from underneath. Wipe the buttock area with the wet wipe or warm washcloth.
Step 6
Unfold the diaper, place the back portion underneath his buttocks with the tape facing underneath and gently lower the legs back onto the changing area. Apply lotion, diaper rash ointment or petroleum jelly at this time.
Step 7
Pull the front portion of the diaper between her legs and ensure the diaper is placed evenly across the front of her abdominal area. Using one hand, hold the diaper in place.
Step 8
Pull one tab to unfasten and pull over to the top of the diaper and secure it to the front. Repeat this step for the opposite side.
Tips and Warnings
- Check the diaper to ensure it is not too tight. You should be able to slide two fingers in the top front of the diaper. When cleaning, make sure you wipe from front to back, especially for girls to prevent the potential risk of bacterial infections. Use a changing pad or cloth diaper for placing under your baby if you are using a public facility to change the diaper.
- To prevent the risk of injury, you should have all of the supplies within reach before changing the baby's diaper. Using wipes that contain alcohol or fragrance may increase the risk of skin irritation.
