How to Disinfect Children's Molded Ear Plugs

It's ironic and more than a little frustrating. One common preventative measure for ear infections caught while swimming is fitting your child with molded ear plugs. If you don't sterilize the ear plugs regularly, however, the earplugs themselves can become contaminated and cause yet another ear infection. Fortunately, disinfecting molded ear plugs is quick and easy. For best results, you should clean the earplugs after every session. Make it a regular part of the post-workout routine, rather than waiting for signs of infection before disinfecting.

Step 1

Pour one cup of warm water into both bowls.

Step 2

Pour two drips of dish soap into one bowl. Pour one drop of bleach into the other. Swish both bowls around to mix in the cleaners.

Step 3

Set both earplugs into the soap bowl. Use a washcloth to wipe both clean, much as you would while hand-washing dishes.

Step 4

Rinse both earplugs off using the faucet you originally poured the water from.

Step 5

Wipe the earplugs dry with one paper towel.

Step 6

Dip the earplugs in the bleach mix. Wipe clean with a paper towel. If you use the opposite side, you can use the same paper towel you used for drying.
