Your nails are an indication of your overall health. If you are sick or undernourished, your nails will not grow or will not grow to be strong. Eating well and reducing stress are just two ways to promote healthy nails. If you want to try another route, a nail hardener can strengthen nails and prevent them from breaking.
Step 1
Wash your hands with warm water and soap. Keeping your hands clean eliminates germs from the surface of the hands and prevents infection to the nail bed or cuticles.
Step 2
Cut nails evenly. File the edges in one direction.
Step 3
Soak cuticles for five minutes in warm water. Pat hands dry and use a cotton-wrapped cuticle stick to push back cuticles. Trim excess cuticles or hangnails.
Step 4
Apply a nail treatment such as Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails as a base coat. Hard as Nails is a nail treatment that strengthens nails and protects them from breaking.
Step 5
Continue by applying your desired nail color or apply an additional coat of Hard as Nails for a clear, polished look. Repeat this process weekly to promote strong fingernails.
Step 6
Eat a balanced diet with sufficient iron and protein. Eat green, leafy vegetables and beans for iron. Eat lean meats for protein. If you are vegetarian, eat tofu or beans. Drink milk or eat hard-boiled eggs for a good source of zinc, which also can promote good nail health.
