Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by fatigue, muscle pain and stiffness, skin sensitivity, headaches and depression, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. There is no known cause of fibromyalgia, although medical researchers believe that changes in the chemical structure of neurotransmitters, injuries, viral infections and sleep problems might trigger it. There is also no cure, but nutritionists believe that avoiding certain foods might help relieve symptoms.

Nutritional changes should not replace conventional medical treatment. Talk to your doctor before altering your diet to address fibromyalgia symptoms.

Meat

According to Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," meats such as beef, pork and chicken might aggravate fibromyalgia symptoms, including fatigue and muscle pain. These foods contain saturated fats that are thought to inflame muscle tissue and stress the digestive and circulatory systems, which might trigger pain and other symptoms. Balch recommends a vegetarian diet that does not include any type of meat. Use foods such as tofu, beans, nuts and vegetables as replacement protein sources.

Refined Flour

Refined flour, which is found in pastries, white bread and pasta, might aggravate fibromyalgia symptoms, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. These foods, which are simple carbohydrates, are quickly converted by the body into glucose. Some medical researchers believe that rapid elevations in blood glucose levels might restrict blood circulation and cause inflammation, which can produce pain and muscle stiffness. Use whole-grain breads and pastas instead of refined flours. Also, avoid sugary pastries and similar foods, which contain refined flour and refined sugar. Like white flour, refined sugar causes elevated blood glucose levels.

Nightshades

Vegetables and fruits in the nightshade family, which include potatoes, eggplant, bell peppers and tomatoes, contain alkaloids, according to the World's Healthiest Foods website. Alkaloids are thought to impair nerve function and reduce joint mobility, which can worsen the symptoms of fibromyalgia. According to Balch, nightshades also contain a compound called solanine, which interferes with enzyme production in the muscles, which also might increase pain.
