Damiana, or Turnera diffusa, is a shrub found in Central and South America. Spanish missionaries reported that the Mexican Indians drank damiana tea with sugar to enhance their sexual experiences. As a supplement, damiana is used to treat many conditions, but many uses are not evidence-based. It has a reputation for being an aphrodisiac primarily for women, and in this area there has been some study of its use. Anecdotal evidence shows that the effects of this herb are not immediate, and it can take four to six weeks of use before any results are seen.
Tincture
Damiana tincture can either be purchased or made at home. The suggested dosage is 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon) taken one to three times per day. To make the tincture yourself, soak damiana leaves in vodka or rum, approximately one pint of alcohol for every ounce of leaves. After five days, strain the liquid through a coffee filter or cheesecloth. Set the liquid aside and refrigerate, and then soak the strained-out leaves in water for another five days. Use about 3/4 cup of water per ounce of leaves. Strain the water mixture and reserve this liquid as well, but discard the leaves. Heat the water-based liquid enough to dissolve honey, and add a bit to taste. Combine the alcohol-based liquid with the honey-sweetened liquid.
Tea
Damiana tea is purported to help augment sexual stimulation in both men and women. It is also used to help soothe nerves and may help with digestive and bronchial problems. No scientific evidence exists to support these uses, only anecdotal reports. Damiana tea is usually made by taking 2 to 4 grams of dried damiana leaves, crushing them into powder, and then adding this to a cup of very hot water. Let the mixture steep for 15 to 30 minutes. Large quantities of damiana taken internally may cause stomach upset and other issues. Pregnant women should not take damiana in any form.
Pills
In pill form, you can take anywhere from 400 mg to 800 mg capsules or tablets up to three times per day. Take the pill forms of damiana with a full glass of water. Be sure the supplement you choose contains a standardized herbal extract of pure damiana. Beware of additives and fillers, which may make the product cheaper but less effective.
Damiana is often included with other herbs such as muira puama and licorice in a combination formula. One such combination supplement, ArginMax, has actually been the subject of double-blind studies. It was shown to boost desire, reduce vaginal dryness and increase frequency of sex, among other positive sexual results.
